Dining rooms, if they even exist at all, sometimes have no walls, but are designated only by the obvious purpose of a table and chairs. No matter what colors you choose for your open concept living room and kitchen, make sure they’re colors that you love. According to theUniversity of British Columbia, blues are ideal for creative work environments as they promote communication, trust, and efficiency.

It’s an awesome option for spaces where you want a coastal or beachy feel or a nice blue gray wall color. It is a cool gray color with very slight blue undertones. It’s not a super light color – it is pigmented enough that it definitely reads as gray. I’d classify it as closer to a medium than light gray.

Still not sure what paint color to choose?

This provides a little variety and subtle depth to the room while staying cohesive and complementary. Some homeowners choose to stick with one color throughout every part of their open floor plan. Others decide to mix it up and paint different colors in each section according to the room and function. In decades past, rooms were divided into purpose-driven, defined spaces in many cases.

If you want to create more of a separation between the two spaces, you can choose to paint the living room and kitchen different colors. For example, you could paint the living room in a light blue and the kitchen in a cream or white. Or, you could paint the living room in a warm color like yellow or orange, and the kitchen in a cool color like blue or green. If you want to paint your open concept living room and kitchen in the same color, you’ll want to choose a light and airy color. This will help to make the space feel bigger and brighter.

Find a Color

Light changes according to the time of day and directional exposure, and colors look different in different types of light. With an open floor plan, the same large space typically has windows with different exposures. If you’re using a single paint color on all of the walls, make sure the paint looks the same on each. If you’re using a variety of paint colors, make sure they still look good together under various combinations of natural and artificial light.

However, remember that more saturated yellows can be overpowering, so choose lighter shades like buttercream or lemon meringue for a softer effect. Every open floor plan needs a center of attention or focal point. A lot of homeowners put a lot of care and thought into their kitchens and living rooms in an open floor plan. However, I feel strongly that open common spaces – especially if you have an open concept “gathering” type living space, should all be painted one cohesive color. I also love accent walls, molding, and wallpaper in certain spaces.

In large doses, black can make a space dark and uninviting and inhibit creative thinking. Therefore, it is best used as an accent color rather than a wall color. For learning spaces, yellow can help hold attention and foster creativity, making it one of the best wall colors for education.

One of the most important thing to remember about all paint colors is that they appear differently in different lighting situations. So, you want to be sure to paint large samples and check them at different times of day to be sure that you like the way the color looks. You personally are probably already drawn to either a cool or warm color palette, but this is the time to commit if you haven’t already. Pick a paint color that flows with your existing tone.

And it is true, a new paint color is the least expensive and easiest update for any type of space. However, open concept homes can be a bit tricky when it comes to paint. I am often asked where to start and stop the change in a paint color and what colors look best next to each other within the same space.

An example would be a kitchen that is open to a great room that includes space for living and eating. While browsing potential colors, select a paint chip for each non-neutral color you’d like to use. Paint always looks brighter and more intense on a wall than it does on a paint chip.
